Political. Upon application, an unpaid leave for one (1) year subject to renewal for the first term of office but not to exceed five (5) years, shall be granted to any teacher for the purpose of campaigning for, or serving in, a public office. Upon return from such leave, the teacher shall be placed at the same position on the salary schedule as if the teacher had taught in the school system during such period.
