RANGE OF POSSIBLE CONFIGURATIONS‌. The Task 14 Statement of Work defines “Aftermarket Devices” as devices “capable of being easily installed into existing vehicles without authorized interconnection with (the) vehicles’ electrical network“, i.e. these devices acquire only power from the vehicle, not data. At its simplest, a basic Vehicle Awareness Device (VAD) would broadcast the SAE J2735 Basic Safety Message (BSM) meeting Minimum Performance Requirements (MPR) established by SAE J2945 Dedicated Short Range Communications Minimum Performance Requirements for the benefit of other equipped vehicles and provide no apparent functionality to the driver of the transmitting vehicle. At the other extreme are devices specifically designed to provide the driver of the equipped vehicle with communications based cooperative safety functionality through the device’s Human Machine Interface (HMI). These devices would both broadcast and receive BSM information. All of these devices would have the capability to communicate through an infrastructure-based network in order to execute security functions within the connected vehicle safety system. The accuracy and timeliness of the transmitted data depends on the data source. Devices without access to the vehicle network may rely on Global Positioning System (GPS) positional data and derived information (e.g. speed, direction). GPS data is of varying quality and suffers from drop outs. Use of different (proprietary) GPS decoding algorithms complicates the exchange of information between vehicles. Task 12 investigated the possibility of On-Board Diagnostic port (OBDII) enabled devices, but concluded that the presence, quality and timeliness of such data could not support the entire set of 12 core safety applications identified in the study 9.
