Relevance of the Objectives to the Topics Addressed by the Call In this section we clearly state the relevance of the objectives to the topics ad-‐ dressed by the call. Table 4 - Relevance of the Objectives Topic in the Call Relevance of the Objectives Research Infrastructure Part of the Capacities Specific Programme The overall objective of the Research Infrastructures part of the “Capacities” specific programme is to optimize the use and development of the best re- search infrastructures existing in Eu- rope, and to help to create in all fields of science and technology new research infrastructures of pan-European inter- est needed by the European scientific community to remain at the forefront of the advancement of research. The ulti- mate aim is to be able to help industry to strengthen its base of knowledge and its technological know-how. The application of novel cloud and virtuali-‐ zation paradigms to enhance existing grid infrastructures will contribute to: • Optimize the use. The virtualization al-‐ lows grid resources to be better adapted for specific applications. This will di-‐ rectly expand the number of appropriate applications for the grid and thus in-‐ crease the number of users. • Development of the best research infrastructures. Many research infra-‐ structures could be expanded through the direct use of the proposed cloud interfaces. This will make them more dynamic and better integrate them with existing grid resources. Combined these will keep European re- search infrastructures at the technology forefront; and to help European industry to strengthen its technological know-how in virtualization and cloud computing.
