Role. (a) The role of a guidance counsellor (teacher) is to collaboratively design and/or implement a guidance counselling program which proactively fosters the development and mental health of students in the context of the Catholic school. The guidance counsellor (teacher) may be required to utilise their professional skills in areas including counselling, consultation, programming and psycho-educational assessment to address the relevant educational, personal, vocational and social needs of students within the school setting. In the wider context consultation is required with specialist and other personnel as well as various agencies in achieving service delivery. (b) The guidance counsellor (teacher) operates as an integral part of the school’s educational team and provides services which are negotiated with and authorised by the school Principal in support of both the Mission of the school and the goals of the school’s development plan. (c) The guidance counsellor (teacher) designation will not include those persons specifically employed as counsellors (without teacher qualification) whose role includes provision of careers advice, social work, school home liaison, work experience or other coordinating roles.
