Serious illness is defined as being hospitalized, homebound under psychiatric care, temporarily totally disabled, and/or not able to perform the activities of daily living. The program is not intended to provide benefits to those members having surgery which is not medically necessary or for normal maternity leave. To qualify for the Sick Leave Assistance Program, an employee, or a member of the employee’s immediate family in Section 12.01, must have experienced a catastrophic illness or injury, as documented by a medical or mental health professional and the employee must have exhausted his/her sick leave and personal leave. The Sick Leave Assistance Program cannot be used beyond the current school year and may not be used to care defer application for or receipt of disability retirement benefits. C. Request for use of Sick Leave Assistance Program will be considered on a case by case basis. A committee composed of two (2) Board appointed members and two (2) Association appointed members and chaired by a mutually agreeable fifth member, will make a determination based on the following criteria. 1. The term serious health condition is not intended to cover short-term conditions for which treatment and recovery are very brief. The common cold, influenza, earaches, upset stomach, headaches (other than migraines), routine dental or orthodontia problems, etc., are not serious health conditions unless complications arise. For example, for most individuals who contracted H1N1, this influenza did not rise to the level of a serious health condition. The agency may require medical certification of a serious health condition. The minimum number of hours that may be granted is twenty-four (24).
