TEACHING LOADS AND ASSIGNMENTS. A. It is specifically understood that the School District is mandated to comply with the requirements of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act / No Child Left Behind (ESEA/NCLB).
B. The normal weekly Board shall assign teachers according to No Child Left Behind federal requirements when placing them in teaching load in the senior positions.
C. Secondary teachers, except for counselors and junior high school will librarians, shall be twenty (20) teaching periods and scheduled for five (5) unassigned teaching periods, one (1) advisory/media period and one (1) preparation periodsperiod, which shall be used in accordance with the procedure outlined in the Policy Handbook. The secondary preparation period will be at least fifty-two (52) minutes in length. TEACHING LOADS AND ASSIGNMENTS. A. 6.1 The normal daily schedule for all full-time certificated personnel in the middle and senior high school will include one unassigned planning period. The term "unassigned planning period" shall be construed to include the use of this period for purposes other than planning when daily schedule changes are necessary.
6.2 Since pupils are entitled to be taught by teachers who are working within their area of competence, teachers shall not be assigned, except temporarily and for good cause, outside their teaching certificates or their major or minor fields of study. All teaching positions shall be filled by certified teachers. Every first year teacher shall provide the general office with a complete up-to-date transcript no later than the fourth Friday of September. Every teacher who earns additional credit should up-date their transcripts annually by the same date.

B. The normal weekly teaching load schedule for all certificated personnel in the elementary school will include a minimum of 265 minutes of planning time during the student contact day per week, which must be forty in blocks of no less than 20 minutes per period and may include a duty-free recess. Any anticipated changes that significantly impact the amount of recess used as planning time will create the need for a recess committee (40) elementary principals and two teachers from each elementary school that have been selected by their staffs). The committee will determine those changes.
6.4 Teachers who will be affected by a change in grade assignments in the elementary school and by changes in subject assignment in the secondary school will be notified by their principals as soon as practicable. Such changes will be voluntary to the extent possible. Every effort will be made to avoid reassigning probationary teachers to different subjects or grade levels unless the teacher requests such change.
6.5 Each teacher will be notified of his/her probable teaching periods assignment for the following year no later than the last day of school. Notification will occur as soon as possible when changes need to be made during the summer.
6.6 Any extra curricular assignment or additional daily class for which a teacher is paid, in addition to his base salary, shall be voluntary.
6.7 Vacancies in the school district shall be posted and teachers covered by this agreement shall be given consideration for filling vacancies provided their certification and qualifications are equal to or better than others applying. A vacancy shall be defined for purposes of this Agreement as a position within the bargaining unit presently unfilled including newly created positions.
6.8 Vacancies occurring within the bargaining unit, including newly created positions, shall be posted on a designated bulletin board in each district building along with a copy of such posting sent to the Association President. Positions as above described shall be posted at least ten (10) unassigned preparation periods.

Teachers with conflicting commitments may at the discretion of the building administrator arrange for alternative time.
6.3 It is hereby agreed that counselors, librarians, cooperative and vocational coordinators may be required to begin their work year before the school year starts and work after the school year ends. 6.4 The Administrator(s) of $15.00 per houreach building may, at the beginning of each school year, designate head teachers who shall be authorized to act for the Administration when such administrator is unavoidably absent from the building and unable to act, should the immediate need arise. The teacher must provide, in writing, his/her acceptance of the appointment. The name of the head teacher(s) and his/her duties shall be provided, in writing, to the staff. If the teacher(s) liability insurance will not cover him/ her acting in an administrative capacity, the Board or its designee shall obtain insurance coverage specifically covering the teacher acting in an administrative capacity during the absence of the administrator. Head teachers shall be compensated as set forth in Schedule B. The administrator will provide, where possible, reasonable advance notification of absence. Head teacher(s) may not evaluate or discipline teachers.
6.5 The parties agree to discuss the GenNET Classroom before the implementations of any classes are offered through the district. The topics of discussion will be (and not limited to) class load, teaching load, preparation time, time concerns (coordination of), training and travel to their districts.

TEACHING LOADS AND ASSIGNMENTS. A. The normal weekly teaching load Unit employees who are assigned during their preparation period (other than day-to-day substituting) shall be compensated additionally at a rate directly proportionate to the number of periods in the senior day divided into their daily rate. Such assignment shall be only with the approval of the unit employee and junior high school notification to the Association. In addition The Board recognizes that appropriate texts, library reference facilities, maps and globes, laboratory equipment, audio-visual equipment, art supplies, athletic equipment, current periodicals, standard texts and questionnaires, and similar materials are the tools of the education profession. The Board therefore agrees to keep the schools reasonably and properly equipped and maintained.
D. The parties agree that in the class size shown at the end of this Article, Column A represents the point at which most effective learning can take place and that attempts shall be made to reduce class sizes toward these goals. They further agree that class sizes as shown in Column B represent the point above which effective learning is inhibited and that all reasonable efforts shall be made to avoid scheduling classes larger than these figures. Whenever the administration is faced with a choice, the first emphasis at obtaining goals as stated in Column A shall be in the lower elementary grades.
E. Reasonable efforts shall be made to assign students to sections of a grade or subject in a manner which provides for an equalized student distribution by number and academic ability among those teachers involved. At the elementary level the class size shall be adjusted prior to the hours end of the 2nd full week of school and periods referred toat the secondary level the class size shall be adjusted within two full weeks after the beginning of each semester or class. Students added to classes after the above dates shall be distributed in the manner described above. Exceptions to this procedure shall be made only by mutual agreement of the Board and the Association. This procedure does not apply to specialized classes.
F. In the event that a class exceeds the suggested maximum on Column B, each the Principal and Superintendent shall meet with the Association and the teacher(s) of the class(es) involved to find an equitable solution to the problem. If another resolution cannot be reached within one week, then elementary teachers will be paid $280 per student per semester for all students above the overload maximum. Middle school and high school teachers will be paid $57.00 per student per class per semester. This amount will be prorated if the class is less than one semester in duration.
G. The District will maintain a list of substitutes. The list will be made known to teachers, if requested. The District reserves the right to assign substitutes to classrooms, but will attempt to fill particular teacher requests, especially for absences of longer duration.
H. All ancillary staff members shall be given notice of their tentative assignments for the forthcoming school year no later than June 1st of that year. In cases where the necessity to make changes arises after the date, the ancillary staff members affected will be notified by mail of the change as early as possible.

TEACHING LOADS AND ASSIGNMENTS. A. The normal classroom teaching load in the senior high school (grades 9-12) will be thirteen (13) teaching blocks and a minimum of two (2) unassigned preparation blocks over each three day period in the school year. Independent StudiesFive (5) representatives of the Board and five (5) representatives of the St. Ignace Education Association will meet at least once annually to recommend the teaching hours of the different subject areas in the secondary schools. This committee will make its determination by June 1 of the preceding year.
G. The Board agrees that use of supervisors or non-unit personnel will not cause a reduction in assignment of present bargaining unit members from the Schedule A positions.

6.4 It is hereby agreed that counselors, librarians, cooperative and vocational coordinators may be required to begin their work year before the school year starts and work after the school year ends. The teacher must provide, in writing, his/her acceptance of the appointment. The name of the head teacher(s) and his/her duties shall be provided, in writing, to the staff. If the teacher(s) liability insurance will not cover him/ her acting in an administrative capacity, the Board or its designee shall obtain insurance coverage specifically covering the teacher acting in an administrative capacity during the absence of the administrator. Head teachers shall be compensated as set forth in Schedule B. The administrator will provide, where possible, reasonable advance notification of absence. Head teacher(s) may not evaluate or discipline teachers.
6.6 The parties agree to discuss the GenNET Classroom before the implementations of any classes are offered through the district. The topics of discussion will be (and not limited to) class load, teaching load, preparation time, time concerns (coordination of), training and travel to their districts.
