Temporary Assignment of Higher Duties. Out of Classification Pay a. The appointing authority or designee may require that an employee temporarily perform duties that are outside the employees' normal duty assignments. However, when the appointing authority or designee requires in writing that an employee perform substantially all of the duties of the higher classification, or duties which, in the judgment of the appointing authority, are substantially higher than the level of duties normally assigned, the employee shall be paid out of classification pay at the rate of 5% above the employee’s base pay for the percentage of time worked in such higher assignment. Such higher assignment pay shall begin on the sixth day of the assignment of higher duties. b. If an employee is assigned in writing by the Appointing Authority or designee to perform supervisory duties, the employee shall be compensated for the hours worked performing such additional duties by the payment of an additional five percent (5%) above the employee's base salary. Such higher assignment pay shall begin on the date authorized by the Appointing Authority or designee or on the sixth day of the assignment of higher duties. c. Temporary assignment of higher duties shall be for no more than ninety (90) consecutive working days, except as follows: (1) Sick leave or family care relief (2) Leave of absence (3) Conditions of extended emergency d. The appointing authority or designee may also fill positions by temporary reclassification. Temporary assignment of higher duties in excess of ninety (90) consecutive working days shall be by temporary reclassification. e. Head Start Classroom Temporary Assignment (1) In the event the Deputy Director or designee requires a Head Start Associate Teacher, Teacher or other trained staff to substitute for an absent Head Start Teacher, Lead Teacher/ Infant Toddler or Site Supervisor, such employee shall receive five percent (5%) or Step A, whichever is greater, of the higher classification’s hourly rate for each required hour of substitute work. (2) Upon approval of the Program Officer or Manager, higher duty pay is applicable when there are children present in the center and the Site Supervisor is absent and unavailable for the entire day; or, when the Site Supervisor is out of the center for a portion of the day and is not available by any means for that time. This does not include when the Site Supervisor is out of the site for meetings or other activities in the normal course of work and is available by phone or other communication.
