The Backpack series Sample Clauses

The Backpack series. This study focuses on the Bahrain textbooks Backpack series. This series is published by Xxxxxxx Longman Company. This company supplies textbooks to overseas countries, including Bahrain. In Bahrain, this three-book series is modified to suit the Bahraini context’s needs, and it is used for the upper primary level (grades 4-6). Each year, students study one book as their curriculum. Each book consists of nine units; each unit has one topic that integrates the four language skills using a wide range of activities that include songs, reading passages, chants, projects, and short stories called little book in Backpack1. In Backpack2 and Backpack3, the little book is substituted by magazines. Other activities include communicative tasks and grammar focus (Xxxxxxx Education, Inc., 2012). Since each textbook is divided into units that are integrated in content, each unit is analysed as one text. This series is chosen based on the study of gender socialisation development in children. Children start their school with rigid gender stereotypes (Sovič and Hus, 2015). Yet, there is a chance to amend these stereotypes in the “critical period” of gender identity formation, which starts in the years of early adolescence (Bukatko and Daehler, 2012). These books are targeting students at this particular age group, and therefore have been chosen.
