Common use of THE SCHOOL CALENDAR Clause in Contracts

THE SCHOOL CALENDAR. Prior to a recommendation to the School Board concerning the school year calendar, the Superintendent will consult with and consider the suggestions of the representatives of the Association in that regard and in the use and placement of workshop days. Final decisions concerning the school calendar shall remain the sole and exclusive responsibility of the Board. In the event that the calendar includes release days, each school will establish a team to work with the principal to plan the agenda for those days. Te a m members will be elected by the teaching staff in each building in an election conducted by the Bu ild in g Ad min ist rat ion following procedures developed jointly with the Association and reviewed with the Superintendent. The teacher work day on teacher workshop days shall be of seven (7) hours duration. There will be two (2) workshop days before the students’ first day of school. At least seven (7) hours during those two ( 2) workshop days will be meeting-free and uninterrupted for teacher preparations, but the s e v en ( 7) hours need not all be on the same day. If the seven ( 7) hours are split over two ( 2) days, the blocks of time for teacher preparation will be in increments of at least t h r ee ( 3) hours. The agenda for these days will be finalized no later than August 25th. Once the school year calendar has been adopted and prior to making any recommendations to the School Board relative to modification therein, the Superintendent will, if possible and if time and circumstances permit, consult with the Association and consider their recommendations. A nurse may schedule workshop days before the start of the school year in lieu of attending teacher workshop days if the nurse requests his/her building principal for permission to do so and the principal agrees.

A nurse and/or guidance counselor may schedule workshop up to three work days before the start of the school year or after the end of the school year in lieu of attending teacher workshop days and parent conferences if the nurse nurse/guidance counselor requests his/her their building principal for permission to do so and the principal agrees. If the principal denies the request, they will provide a reason. When the last day for students and teachers falls on the same day, students will have an early release day with the remainder of the day devoted to closing classroom and teacher end of the year responsibilities.
