VOLUNTARY LEAVES OF ABSENCE. 18.4.1. Upon application, consistent with School Committee Policy, of a member of the professional staff and upon the recommendation of the principal, after consideration of the merits of the request, the Superintendent may grant a full or partial leave of absence. Written application for leaves of absence must be submitted before July 1 of the year in which leave is requested. Requests submitted after the deadline date will be considered only in the event of extraordinary circumstances as determined by the Superintendent. During a leave of absence, a teacher will receive no salary, no Region payment of insurance plans, or other benefits. A teacher on leave of absence will receive the same consideration with respect to reduction-in-force and future staffing plans as if they/their were actively teaching and not on leave. 18.4.2. Salary credit for the year of leave of absence is at the discretion of the Superintendent upon the recommendation of the principal. Persons granted leaves of absence by the Superintendent who are on leave on January 1 must inform the Superintendent by February 1 of the year in which they intend to re- turn or the teacher’s service will be considered terminated at the end of the school year for which the leave was granted. 18.4.3. A teacher’s insurance plan will be continued during the period of any unpaid leave of absence (including a maternity leave), provided the teacher pays the total monthly cost of such coverage to the Region by the seventh (7th) of each month.
