Ambulatory surgery definition

Ambulatory surgery means surgical procedures that include but are not limited to those recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”), the Department’s Division of Medical Assistance (“DMA”), the State Health Benefit Plans, or by any successor entities, as reimbursable ambulatory surgery procedures. Ambulatory surgery is provided only to patients who are admitted to a facility which offers ambulatory surgery and which does not admit patients for treatment that normally requires stays that are overnight or exceed 24 hours and which does not provide accommodations for treatment of patients for periods of twenty-four hours or longer.
Ambulatory surgery means surgery requiring a period of post-operative observation but not requiring overnight hospitalization. This includes procedures involving any cutting instrument, procedures involving microscopic or endoscopic surgery, and procedures involving the use of a laser for the removal or repair of an organ or other tissue. For purposes of this Chapter, ambulatory surgery is synonymous with outpatient surgery.
Ambulatory surgery means surgical procedures that are more complex than office procedures performed under local anesthesia, but less complex than major procedures requiring prolonged postoperative monitoring and hospital care to ensure safe recovery and desirable results. General anesthesia is used in most cases. The patient must arrive at the facility and expect to be discharged on the same day. Ambulatory surgery shall only be performed by physicians or dentists licensed to practice in the State of Mississippi.
