Being open definition

Being open simply means acknowledging, apologizing and then explaining what happened to patients and/or their carers that have been involved in a patient safety incident (moderate, severe harm). This process only applies to those incidents where a patient has been harmed.
Being open simply means apologising and explaining what happened to patients and/or their carers who have been involved in a patient safety incident and which may or may not result in a complaint or claim. Communicating openly and effectively with patients and/or their carers is a vital part of the process of dealing with errors or problems in their treatment and can also decrease the trauma felt1. Research has shown that patients will forgive medical errors when they are disclosed promptly, fully and compassionately2 and such an approach can even reduce the likelihood of a subsequent complaint or claim.
Being open means apologising and explaining what happened to patients and/or their carers who have been involved in a patient safety incident. This approach should also be adopted when dealing with concerns expressed to the PALS and formal complaints.
