In both use cases, decision support is hampered by the data access problems that come with Big Data; and in both cases, the platform can be tested and exploited with minimal interfacing to the currently used decision support tools. A four phase work plan will be followed, integrating the use cases in an analysis, development, evaluation and re-analysis cycle; this will provide for the early delivery and evaluation of prototypes, and enhance our ability to adjust to evolving technologies and user requirements. As well as developing world beating technology, Optique will exploit experience from the use case deployments to develop high quality tutoring and training resources, and will engage in an aggressive dissemination and exploitation program aimed at achieving the widest possible uptake of its technology. Numbers provided by Siemens and Statoil suggest that Optique technology could free up expert time worth more than €120,000,000/year in Siemens and Statoil alone—resources that could be redeployed so as to contribute to value creation, and to increasing competitiveness and profitability. Optique could thus make a significant contribution to shaping the future of European industry. We are at a tipping point where a combination of innovative research and maturing technologies presents a unique opportunity to develop a solution to the seemingly intractable problems posed by Big Data. The Optique consor- tium is ideally positioned to exploit this opportunity by bringing to bear a combination of: • World leading researchers, six of whom are, e.g., amongst the most highly cited researchers in their areas1 • Experienced systems integrators able to assemble complex sub-systems into a robust generic solution • Support and training experts capable of deploying new and advanced computing technology in industry • IT consultants and vendors with strong expertise in positioning and distributing innovative solutions • Committed industry stakeholders with diverse data access problems and a virtually unlimited supply of data As a driving force behind the development of Optique, and as a test bed for results, we have selected four use cases from our Use Case partners, Siemens and Statoil. The key features and metrics of the four use cases are summarized in Table 1, showing that they span a wide range of challenges typical for Big Data access in industry. The evaluation will include both quantitative and qualitative tests using high volume (TB sized) and high complexity data sets, high velocity data streams, a wide variety of distributed sources and appropriately-sized user groups in the setting of our real-world use cases. In their letters of intent, both Siemens and Statoil have committed themselves to provide: • real data from day one, • the technical infrastructure and computational resources required for evaluation, and • a sufficient supply of domain experts for requirement analysis and evaluation.
