Brief Overview of the Project Sample Clauses

Brief Overview of the Project. The Memba and Nacala-a-Velha Districts of Nampula Province were the two focus areas for this follow-on grant. The districts are located in the northeastern part of Nampula Province and most of the districts’ population is rural with about 25 percent urban. These districts are the two (of the province’s 21 districts) poorest and most inaccessible in Nampula and in Mozambique in general. Their estimated total population is 286,814. The under-five mortality rate of 315/1000 is reported to be almost 50% higher than the national average of 219/1000 live births, and maternal mortality is recognized to be high due obstructed labor, anemia (hemorrhage), and infections (including puerperal and post-abortion sepsis). The public sector is the main provider of health services in the two districts and Save the Children is the only NGO partner that is active in these Nampula Districts (see Figure 1 for a map of the project site). The project was working through the existing district-based health facilities to strengthen the capacity of personnel, and promote and deliver child survival and maternal care services. The major public health problems that contribute to high infant and maternal morbidity and mortality include malaria, anemia, infections (ARI, TB, STI/HIV/AIDS), malnutrition, and diarrhea.

Brief Overview of the Project. The proposed target is to improve the basic skills level of adults at the pre-entry and entry levels and at Level 1in the following priority areas - areas of deprivation defined in terms of the Index of Multiple Deprivation: • “the Fens” – Fenland and the adjoining areas of East Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire • the Oxmoor area of North Huntingdon • the Arbury, King’s Xxxxxx and Abbey Wards in the North and East of Cambridge City In terms of geographical areas this project will also seek to identify and address pockets of deprivation outside the major areas of deprivation above. In addition to the focus on particular geographical areas, a key feature of this target will be to focus on: • people with low skill levels i.e. below Level 2 • those groups in the community who traditionally miss out on learning opportunities, especially travellers, homeless people, single parents, unemployed people, migrant workers, asylum seekers and ex-refugees. The work related to these target groups will seek to serve them wherever they live within the County. How the project will enable us to achieve the LPSA targets This project will focus on stretching existing targets by capacity building in various forms: • Enhancing skills and competences of front line staff in recognising basic skills needs • Promoting and facilitating access to existing provision • Outreach work with hard to reach groups and communities • Identifying needs, opportunities and priorities for additional provision Progress to date (where performance data is only available annually progress may identify inputs to date) The project covers the academic years 2005-06 and 2006-07. Major milestones for monitoring of learners’ achievements will be at the end of each academic year. The project has been in its setup phase to date, involving: • recruiting a project manager and an implementation manager, both with significant experience in skills for life work. A base has been created for them at March Youth and Community Centre • planning discussions with key partners, including the Learning and Skills Council and the County Council’s own workforce development staff • briefing frontline staff within the Adult and Community Learning Service and the Library-based Learning Centres on the project aims. Both of these Services are already engaged in supporting learners who are working towards completing the courses which will count in the achievement of this target.
