Bursary support. 4.1 For the duration of this agreement, the SCITT will offer a minimum bursary of £310 to any student who is in receipt of full state maintenance grant of 4.2 Bursary payments will be divided into two equal instalments and paid after the two Student Loans Company fee payments. This will be the same for all trainee bursary payments.

We will keep a contingency fund in the region of £7,000 - £10, 000 per year for this purpose. Access to this discretionary fund will means tested.

However we do intend to extend and enhance the access funding which we currently offer to trainees suffering financial hardship during the course. These are discretionary, means tested awards made by the SCITT Management Board in cases of financial hardship. The College has closely examined its student profile and has based its bursary offer upon directly benefiting students from under-represented groups. The bursary allocations have a number of aims: minimising the perceived financial barriers to HE; raising the aspirations and widening access from under-represented groups; and, as part of our commitment to encouraging and supporting full-time HE students in their studies. 4.2 For new entrants in 2011-12 we will offer a cash bursary of £500 per annum to any full time student in receipt of a full maintenance grant. Students will be required to sign a declaration confirming their address details, that they consider themselves eligible and that their attendance is both current and active. 4.3 Bursary payments will be made in one instalment. 4.4 Given the profile of our HE students this bursary scheme meets our specific intention to encourage and support students who are under- represented in HE.

Bursary support. 4.1 Shire is concerned that variable tuition fee arrangements should not deter those students from low and middle income groups from accessing our PGCE course. 4.2 Shire will pay £500 to trainees in the ‘partial state support’ threshold of between £17,500-£20,000 and pay a bursary of £700 to trainees in receipt of ‘full state support’ 4.3 Bursary payments will be one-off payments made in the Spring term annually. 4.4 Shire expects that approximately 50% of its trainees will benefit from this bursary support.

One at the end of each term. Scholarship payments are likely to follow a similar pattern. 4.4 All bursary and scholarship support is additional to previous financial support. 5. Publicising fees and financial support 5.1 A number of methods will be used to ensure that prospective students are as clear as possible about the fee charged, and the amount of student support they may be entitled to. These are outlined below: 5.2 The course brochure will contain a section on finance, including fee and support information. Support information will include institutional support and support available from the government through the teaching bursaries, maintenance grant and maintenance loans. 5.3 The fee and support information will also be published in a leaflet which we will distribute in the course of any outreach activity. 5.4 The fee and support information will be clearly articulated to all applicants at interview stage, before they make their key decisions on whether to accept a place.
