Bursary support. 4.1 For the duration of this agreement, the SCITT will offer a minimum bursary of £319 to any student who is in receipt of full state maintenance grant of 4.2 Bursary payments will be divided into two equal instalments and paid after the two Student Loans Company fee payments. This will be the same for all trainee bursary payments.

In analysing the demand for bursary support based upon household income we will initially use the national data given by the DfES. Currently this shows 30% of the student population receive full state support whilst 55% receive some support.

Bursary payments will be made in three instalments of £111 per term. 4.2 We anticipate that up to 75% of applicants will be able to benefit from these bursaries and intend to put aside sums of between £12,000 - £15,000 to fund the scheme. 4.4 In addition to this, we have established a discretionary fund to alleviate proven hardship of any trainees, including our EU students, during the course and to ensure equality of access for all. We keep a contingency fund for this purpose. Access to this discretionary fund will be means tested. We also provide in-kind support such as access to laptops, video cameras and course books to support study.

Bursary support. 4.1 At this level of variable fees we are not required to provide bursary support. However we do intend to extend and enhance the access funding which we currently offer to trainees suffering financial hardship during the course. These are discretionary, means tested awards made by the SCITT Management Board in cases of financial hardship. We will set aside 8% of the variable fees funding for this purpose. 4.2 Usually some 3 – 4 trainees make use of this facility during the academic year.
Bursary support. 4.1 City College Plymouth has an established record for widening participation in HE. The College has closely examined its student profile and has based its bursary offer upon directly benefiting students from under-represented groups. The bursary allocations have a number of aims: minimising the perceived financial barriers to HE; raising the aspirations and widening access from under-represented groups; and, as part of our commitment to encouraging and supporting full-time HE students in their studies. 4.2 For new entrants in 2011-12 we will offer a cash bursary of £500 per annum to any full time student in receipt of a full maintenance grant. Students will be required to sign a declaration confirming their address details, that they consider themselves eligible and that their attendance is both current and active. 4.3 Bursary payments will be made in one instalment. 4.4 Given the profile of our HE students this bursary scheme meets our specific intention to encourage and support students who are under- represented in HE.
