Chumashan languages. Chumashan languages are a family of languages formerly spoken in Southern California by the Native American Chumashan people. Chumashan languages have been well studied by both descriptive and theoretical phonologists, in particular with reference to the process of sibilant harmony analyzed here (Xxxxxx 1970; Xxxxxxxxx 1972; Xxxxxxxxxx 1974; Poser 1982, 2004; Xxxx 1991; Hansson 2001/2010; XxXxxxxx 2007; among others). There are at least three Chumashan languages that show a certain degree of sibilant harmony, Ineseño (or Ynezeño, now Xxxxxx), Barbareño, and Ventureño. I focus on Ineseño since it has been the language most discussed in the theoretical literature (Xxxxxxxxxx 1974; Poser 1982, 2004; Xxxx 1991; Gafos 1996; Hansson 2001/2010; XxXxxxxx 2007; among others) and probably the best documented (Applegate 1972), and because of the three languages it is the one that shows the clearest case of sibilant harmony (Poser 2004). King (1969) established the number of speakers of speakers of Chumashan languages in pre-contact times at about 10,700 and 17,250. Unfortunately, no first-language speaker remain today
