Considerations connected with security Sample Clauses

Considerations connected with security. There is some basic security operations for which an infrastructure is required. These are:  Confidentiality  Authentication  Authorisation  Integrity  Audit trails These can be achieved by various techniques to mitigate a large number of threats and risks. While the whole subject of providing these services properly is beyond the scope of this project, we can quote some general principles, and state how they will be implemented in the validation stage of this section. The normal mechanism for providing confidentiality is to use secret key encryption between two parties. Here a message can be encrypted by performing a particular operation with a secret encryption key (SEK). This key is a shared secret known to the two parties, but not to an outside attacker. A second application of the encryption operation will reveal the original message. Of course providing the shared secret of this key to both parties is a challenge; this challenge will be addressed with HANDLE, but only partially. Authentication can be confirmed either by using secret key encryption or private/public keys. In public/private technology, one uses an encryption algorithm that is hard to encrypt but easy to decrypt. The private key is known only to the party being authenticated; the public key can be widely known. With this mechanism, one can also achieve non-repudiation. A common way of transmitting a shared secret for secret key encryption is to encrypt a short message containing the secret key with the public key of the destination; only the recipient can then decrypt it with his private key to obtain the shared secret. The Public Key is usually bundled in with the Identity of the owner and possibly other information like the period of validity into a Certificate. The authenticity of the certificate attributes can be assured by encrypting with the private key of the owner. Unfortunately public/private key encryption takes much more resource, hence secret key encryption with a shared key is preferable in constrained devices; this assumes that only the authenticator and the party being authenticated know the shared secret. In this Deliverable, we will call the token being used to achieve authentication an Authentication Token (AT) – whether implemented with secret key or public key encryption. If there is any danger of a message containing an AT being intercepted, it is preferable that it be sent in an encrypted way. Message Integrity is assured by running the whole message through a...
