Continuing Contracts. Effective August 23, 2011 (Based on current statute) To be considered for a continuing contract (tenure): a. In order for a teacher to be considered eligible for continuing contract status, he or she must have served in the district for a minimum number of years as follows: (1) Three years of teaching (not necessarily consecutive) within the last five-year period and at least five years in Ohio; or (2) Two years of service as a teacher or administrator, if the teacher previously held a continuing contract in another Ohio school district. b. The teacher must have on file by March 15 of the school year of tenure eligibility either: (1) A professional, permanent, or life certificate (2) A professional (5-year) license (under prior law, or a “senior” or “lead” professional license under current law) c. If a teacher holds a professional, permanent, or life certificate, no additional coursework is required for continuing contract eligibility. If a teacher holds a professional license, then he or she must also have completed additional coursework in order to be eligible. (1) If the teacher did NOT hold a master’s degree at the time he or she received his or her first teaching certificate/license, 30 semester hours of relevant coursework must have been taken since the receipt of that first teaching certificate/license. (2) If the teacher DID hold a master’s degree at the time he or she received his or her first teaching certificate/license, 6 semester hours of relevant graduate coursework must have been taken since the receipt of that first teaching certificate/license. d. A person who receives their initial educator license after January 1, 2011 may not become eligible for continuing contract status in any district until he or she has held an educator license for at least 7 years. e. Any teacher anticipating becoming eligible for a continuing contract must notify the Building Principal in writing, with a copy to the Superintendent, by October 15 of the school year in which the teacher become eligible.

1. Except as provided herein, 2011 (Based on current statute) To be considered for a continuing contract (tenure):
a. In order for a teacher to be considered eligible issuance for continuing contract statusstatus shall be in accordance with the Ohio Revised Code.
2. In accordance with the Revised Code, he or she must have served in eligibility for continuing contract status is based on three (3) factors: the district for a minimum number level of years as follows:
(1) Three years the teaching certificate/licensure held by the teacher and the length and quality of teaching (not necessarily consecutive) service within the last five-year period and at least five years in Ohio; or
(2) Two years of service as a teacher or administrator, District. The certification/licensure requirement is met if the teacher previously held a continuing contract in another Ohio school district.
b. The teacher must have on file by March 15 of the school year of tenure eligibility either:
holds: (1a) A professional, permanent, or life certificate
(2) A professional (5-year) license (under prior law, or a “senior” or “lead” professional license under current law)
c. If a teacher holds a professional, permanent, or life certificate, no additional coursework is required for continuing contract eligibility. If a teacher holds or (b) a professional license, then he or she must also have completed additional coursework in order to be eligible.educator license plus either:
(1) If the teacher did NOT hold if a master’s degree was held at the time he of initially receiving a certificate/license, six semester hours of graduate coursework in the area of licensure or she received his in an area related to the teaching field since the initial issuance of the certificate/license; or her first teaching (2) if no master’s degree was held at the time of initially receiving a certificate/license, 30 semester hours of relevant coursework must have been taken in the area of licensure or in an area related to the teaching field since the receipt initial issuance of that first teaching the certificate/license.
(2) If . The service requirement for continuing contract status requires the teacher DID hold to have taught within the District at least three out of the last five years. This requirement has been modified, however, for those teachers who, prior to their employment within the District, had attained continuing contract status in another district. For those teachers, continuing contract eligibility begins after only two years of service within the District, and may begin sooner if the Superintendent so recommends. For a masterteacher who received his/her initial educator’s degree at the time he license on or she received his or her first teaching certificate/license, 6 semester hours of relevant graduate coursework must have been taken since the receipt of that first teaching certificate/license.
d. A person who receives their initial educator license after January 1, 2011 may not become eligible for continuing contract status in any district until he or she has 2011, the teacher must have held an educator educator’s license for at least 7 seven (7) years.
e. Any teacher anticipating becoming eligible . In all cases, the quality of teaching is a major criterion for the awarding of a continuing contract must notify the Building Principal in writing, with a copy to the Superintendent, by October 15 of the school year in which the teacher become eligible(tenure).
