Death-In-Service Benefits. A pension shall be paid for life to the surviving spouse of a deceased employee if each of the following conditions are met: 1. the employee has ten (10) or more years of credited service; 2. the employee was married to the surviving spouse at the time of the employee's death; 3. the employee died while an active employee of the City. The amount of an eligible surviving spouse's benefit shall be the same pension to which the spouse would have been eligible if said employee had retired the day preceding the employee's death; elected form of Payment A; and nominated the said spouse as surviving beneficiary. The benefit shall become payable at the time of death.

Death-In-Service Benefits. Teachers who die in service receive a Death Grant which is currently payable at the rate of 2 x salary. The agreement increases the rate to 3 x salary. This payment is tax-free.
