Demographic Profile. The total population within the ROI was 149,835 persons in 2000, which was an approximately 13.45 percent increase over the population of 1990 (USCB 1993, 2003). Approximately one- fourth of the population (27.95 percent) was located within urban areas or urban clusters (USCB 2003). Only 734 persons (0.49 percent of the total population) resided on farms. This was a decrease of approximately 3.82 percent from the 1990 farm population (USCB 1993). Demographically the ROI population was 94.4 percent White, non-Hispanic; 0.2 percent Black or African American, non-Hispanic; 2.2 percent Native American or Alaska Native, non-Hispanic;
Demographic Profile. WWETB covers the counties of Waterford and Wexford and an overview of some key regional characteristics is provided in the table below. Serving a growing catchment population of over a quarter of a million, there are nonetheless key challenges, with some local areas having high deprivation, age dependency levels and lower education levels. However, there are 29 local areas in Waterford (5 county & 24 city) and 27 local areas in Wexford that are classified as very disadvantaged. These areas would have a scale score of between -20 and -30 on the index which is the second worst category on the scale. Targeting specific provision to these areas facilitates positive systemic change for those communities. Although the overall unemployment rate across the entire region is broadly in line with the national average, there are serious issues around unemployment blackspots, with 12 identified across the counties of Waterford (9) and Wexford (3). According to the live register, in January 2018, there were 19,089 unemployed persons – 57% were male. This equates to approximately 3-in-5 seeking a job for at least 12 months – a fifth had no previous employment experience. Other notable characteristics included: ― Age: youth unemployment rate was approximately 11% • Education: 5633 of those on the live register on January 2018 had attained at most lower secondary education or level 3. ― Sector: wholesale & retail accounted for the largest share ― Occupation: those previously employed in skilled trades and elementary occupations accounted for largest shares of unemployed. Demographic Profile. The total population within the region was 432,438 persons in 2000, which was an approximately 8 percent increase over the population of 1990 (USCB 1990, 2000). Approximately 60 percent of the population lives in urban areas or urban clusters except for Cameron Parish where 100 percent of the population lives in a rural setting (USCB 2000). Only 4,451 persons (1 percent of the total population) resided on farms, a slight decrease from the 1990 farm population which was 6,122 (USCB 1990, 2000). Demographically the LA CREP II area population was 70.8 percent White, non-Hispanic; 26.2 percent Black or African American, non-Hispanic; 0.3 percent Native American or Alaska Native, non-Hispanic; 0.4 percent Asian, non-Hispanic; 0.02 percent Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, non-Hispanic; 0.8 percent all other races or combination of races, non-Hispanic; and 1.3 percent Hispanic (USCB 2000). The total minority population within the LA CREP II area was 125,971 persons or 29.1 percent of the total regional population (USCB 2000). The region is not a location of a concentrated minority population. In 2002, there were 6,772 primary farm operators running 4,907 farms in the area; of these, Whites operated 4,601 farms; Hispanics operated 101 farms; Black or African Americans operated 314 farms; and Native Americans operated 16 farms (USDA 2002).
