While there are a number of disparate information databases and research initiatives, there is a lack of a standardised framework for the determination of skills supply, shortages and vacancies and there is no integrated information system for skills supply and demand across government. The Human Resource Development Strategy of South Africa (HRDSA) and the erstwhile JIPSA have identified that access to relevant and reliable information is an obstacle to the supply of relevant skills for growing the economy. There is therefore a need for an integrated standardised framework and information system for collating the information and for reporting on skills supply and demand in the country.
