For cultural heritage institutions. One of the lessons learned was that many institutions lack management data about their digital collections (see Section 2.6). However knowing how well an institution is doing in fulfilling its mission in the digital realm is a key to being accountable in the long run. A centrally organised survey is probably not the most appropriate incentive to start collecting the kind of data necessary to assess the performance of the institution. Therefore it is recommended that cultural heritage institutions begin collecting management data in a systematic way, and at regular intervals, as soon as the urgency of doing so is recognised and widely accepted within the institution. Here are recommendations that will help institutions achieve this: • Take part in trusted surveys, organised with the aim of monitoring the size, growth, cost, use and sustainability of digital heritage collections. Taking part in surveys such as the ENUMERATE Core Surveys is helpful both for the community of museums, libraries and archives, and for the individual heritage institution. ENUMERATE received many messages affirming the usefulness of an overview of the status of an institution’s digital collections. • Decide at management level about whether or not performance indicators related to the digital heritage collections of the institution should be collected. Because collecting this data must be planned, and facilitated over a long period of time, commitment of management is a key. It is recommended that one member of staff be made responsible for internal monitoring. • Carry out the following steps:
