Medical Screening Examination. A medical screening examination may range from a relatively simple history, physical examination, diagnosis, and treatment, to a complex examination, diagnosis, and treatment that requires substantial use of hospital emergency department and physician services. HMO must pay for the emergency medical screening examination required to determine whether an emergency condition exists, as required by 42 U.S.C. 1395dd. HMOs must reimburse for both the physician's services and the hospital's emergency services, including the emergency room and its ancillary services.
