Mid-Elevation/Sage-Steppe Area Sample Clauses

Mid-Elevation/Sage-Steppe Area. The mid-elevation area/sage-steppe area (hereinafter, the Mid-Elevation Area) occurs in Rich County, ranging primarily from 6,500 to 7,000 feet in elevation. Annual precipitation averages 10 to 12 inches. The dominant shrub types include basin big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata var. tridentata) and low sagebrush (Artemisia arbuscula). A small amount of Wyoming big sagebrush occurs on the north end. A number of broad riparian xxxxxxx occur in the south of the area. Over the last 20 years, various vegetation treatments including chemical (Tebuthiron-‘Spike’), mechanical, wildfire, and prescribed fire have occurred on about 25% of the mid-elevation area within 2 miles of active GSG leks. These treatments and wildfires created patches of increased herbaceous production within stands of sagebrush cover (Xxxxx 2002). Sizes and types of treatments are summarized in Table 3. In the past 20 years, treated acres on the Ranch (all physiographic areas combined, and including wildfires) have seldom exceeded 1,000 acres annually. Ranch management practices maintain the current vegetation mix on the Ranch’s mid- elevation area. In 2018, thirteen active GSG leks (62% of 21 Ranch leks) were in this management area (Figure 2). While GSG occasionally winter in this area, its primary importance to GSG is for lekking, nesting and brood-rearing. This area provides most of the summer grazing rangelands (May to November) for cattle, summer habitat for pronghorn and essential winter habitat for mule deer and elk. Pastures rested in the early spring are sometimes grazed in the fall of the same year depending on range conditions and relationship to the rest rotation grazing program. Other sagebrush wildlife species occur in this area, including pygmy rabbit (Brachylagus idahoensis) and sagebrush obligate passerines.
