Objective of Probationary Period. All original or promotional appointments shall be tentative and subject to a probationary period of six (6) months' continuous service; provided, however, that at the discretion of the Department Head and with approval of the City Manager the probationary period may be extended to a total of one (1) year of continuous service. The probationary period shall be regarded as an integral part of the examination process and shall be utilized for closely observing the employee's work, for securing the most effective adjustment of new employee to his or her position, and for rejecting any probationary employee whose performance does not meet required work standards. Approximately one-half through the original six (6) months probationary period, and at no less than three (3) months thereafter, each probationary employee will be informed by his or her supervisor and/or his or her Department Head of his or her performance evaluation.
