Patients’ and families Sample Clauses

Patients’ and families views about compassionate care Some studies have explored the views of patients and their families about compassionate care (Xxxxx and Xxxxxx, 2010; Xxxxxx and Xxxxx, 2012) but the number of empirical studies in this area is limited (Xxxxxxxx et al, 2016). Xxxxx and Xxxxxx (2010) conducted an appreciative action research study in an acute hospital setting for older people in the UK to explore the views of patients, families and staff about compassionate care and processes, which could help to embed compassionate care in practice. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with patients, their families and staff, structured participants’ observations of staff and patients’ interactions and discussions with staff (Xxxxx and Xxxxxx, 2010). The findings demonstrated that compassionate care for patients was about (i) knowing what matters to the individual, (ii) understanding how they are feeling and (iii) working with the individual to shape the way things are done. These three areas were implemented using caring conversations namely by staff being courageous, curious, collaborating, considerate, connecting emotionally, and compromising and celebrating achievements in care (Xxxxx and Xxxxxx, 2010). The methodological limitation of this study is that several discussions and meetings with staff were used for data generation, which raises concerns about the credibility of the data collection methods used (CASP, 2017a). A qualitative study in the USA exploring the views of burn survivors about compassionate care demonstrated that participants perceived compassionate care as respect for the person, effective communication with the person and provision of competent care by healthcare professionals (Xxxxxx and Xxxxx, 2012). Respect for the person was described as the nurse having an empathetic connection with the individual, providing choice, delivering individualised care and going above and beyond the call of duty. Communication related to staff having interpersonal communication with patients and providing educational information to survivors; while competent care was about staff being competent during interactions and interventions (Badger and Xxxxx, 2012). Xxxxxx and Xxxxx (2012) emphasise that the themes are not linear but interrelated. There are some methodological issues with this study relating to participant recruitment that could affect the transferability of the findings (CASP, 2017a). The sample is a convenience sample and participants were rec...
