Purchaser Leave Tree Selection. In the harvest units, the purchaser will select cut and leave trees based on the following requirements: Leave dominant and co-dominant live green ponderosa pine form all size classes. Leave an average of 8-10 trees per acre, with an average spacing of 50-75 feet between leave trees. All other trees that are not selected a leave trees and meet the requirement in Table 2 Trees Designated for Cutting will be cut. This includes: burned trees with little to no green needles left on them, trees with cracked ▇▇▇▇▇ exposing the cambium tissue, and dead trees. Also cut live green trees that are not well formed or are showing signs of stress.

a. The Purchaser will reduce stocking levels to an average of 20’-25’ spacing between leave trees. Target basal area is 40ft2 to 60 ft2 and stocking post-treatment shall be approximately 70-110 trees per acre. Thinning will retain the highest quality (health, form, vigor) WL, WP, ES, WRC, DF, PP and LP, listed in preferential order.
i. Select well-formed trees free of insect and disease problems such as bark beetle attacks, dwarf mistletoe, blister rust and root rot infection. Retain damage-free trees with the best crown formation.
ii. Thinning will retain superior leave-trees that are the tallest and largest in diameter.
iii. So long as selected leave trees are of good form, health and vigor, variable spacing of plus or minus 5 feet is acceptable to retain the largest tree of the preferred species to create a natural-looking stand.
iv. Select dominant leave trees with the highest live crown ratios, 30% or greater.
b. If the Purchaser fails to meet the cutting prescription, cutting operations will be suspended and the Forest Officer will require leave trees to be marked by the Purchaser, and the marking to be approved by the Forest Officer prior to harvest.

Favored leave tree species in order: western larch, ponderosa pine, and ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇- fir. • Cut all dwarf mistletoe infested merchantable trees. • Cut all bark beetle infested merchantable trees. • Tree spacing can vary depending on the quality of leave trees but should average 30 to 35 feet between tree ▇▇▇▇▇. This will leave approximately 40 trees per acre. • Protect all insect and disease-free regeneration. • Protect any tree that contains a potential raptor nest. If an active raptor nest is verified, protect all trees within 100 feet of the nest tree. • Retain all dead trees greater than 21”. • If the Forest Officer determines that the leave tree selection requirement is not being met by the Purchaser, the Forest Officer may require the Purchaser to sample mark a portion of the unit and have that sample marked portion be approved by the Forest Officer. If the Purchaser continues to be unable to meet the harvest requirements, the Forest Officer may require marking of the entire unit by the Purchaser and approval of marking by the Forest Officer prior to continuing harvest. • If the Forest Officer determines that the leave tree selection requirement is not being met by the Purchaser, the Forest Officer may require the Purchaser to sample mark a portion of the unit and have that sample marked portion be approved by the Forest Officer. If the Purchaser continues to be unable to meet the harvest requirements, the Forest Officer may require marking of the entire unit by the Purchaser and approval of marking by the Forest Officer prior to continuing harvest.
