- R&D innovation and technical excellence. The motivation to carry out project e-GOTHAM lies in the envisioned modernization of the power grid to meet the increasing energy demand and minimize its environmental impact. To handle the problem of the power grid modernization, the e-GOTHAM underlying concept is to divide the overall power grid into localized power grids (microgrids), with increased communication capability between producers and consumers that allow to take actions over the elements within the microgrid and operate in cooperation with the overall power grid. To reach this objective, e-GOTHAM will design an open reference architecture and develop a middleware with seamless connectivity that provides the needed communications and decision support tools to optimize and manage residential, tertiary and industrial microgrids. This will facilitate the integration and management of microgrid elements through a large-scale network of embedded systems that take real-time measurements of energy related parameters and actuate dynamically and autonomously over the microgrid to match power demand and supply. In addition, e-GOTHAM will emphasize the challenge of integrating and managing distributed energy production and storage components for sustainability in the energy sector. Table 1 summarizes the e-GOTHAM overall measurable objectives and the supporting S&T objectives are shown in Table 2 Summary of the main e-GOTHAM innovations. To verify and demonstrate the e-GOTHAM concept and objectives, the project will implement the middleware outlined in Figure 6 along with other project outcomes in the depicted residential, tertiary and industrial microgrid pilots within Figure 5 in an incremental and iterative manner as described in Section B.3 S&T approach and work plan.

  • Research, Science and Technology Cooperation 1.
