Hawaii’s clean energy transformation began with the establishment of the State Energy Office in 1978. Hawaii’s current clean energy transformation policy is built on the foundation of the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) which was launched in 2008 under a landmark partnership between the State of Hawaii and the U.S. Department of Energy.
