The Functions of HANDLE Sample Clauses

The Functions of HANDLE. In this Deliverable, we are concentrating in the use of HANDLE: as enablers for distributed intelligence and for assisting the provision of security. We have taken as Use Case, the Smart Office, and implemented part of an extended scenario. The functions of the HANDLE system have been discussed fully in D2.4 [39]. Its important characteristics are the following:  It has a managed and globally distributed structure like the DNS, and is globally accessible. This is potentially very important, but is not used in IoT6.  Its delegated servers (Local HANDLE Services, i.e. LHS) are owned and operated by arbitrary institutions or organisations.  The Identifier consists of a Prefix and a Suffix. In the Global Handle Service, the GHS prefix is a unique integer provided by CNRI. The Suffix can be registered in the GHS, but may stay only in the LHS.  The Identifier Suffix can be an arbitrary string. Therefore it can be a URI, URN or IP addresses if so desired.  The HANDLE protocol allows for owners of delegated HANDLE services to further delegate services. However, security risks and policy reasons may render this neither desirable nor permitted at global scale.  It has been designed to be scalable by allowing its servers to be distributed, and data on one server splits into two if the load becomes excessive.  It stores Handles as hierarchic Identifiers with secure access to attributes. The access must be authorised. It includes an infrastructure for signing, private/public key operations and integrity checks.  The HANDLE attributes are arbitrary pairs of Type and Value. Their Values can be arbitrary strings, allowing them to represent encrypted contents or any other form of identifier.  The total architecture also includes the secure Identifier Resolver, a Registration scheme and access to various Repositories.  The next release, v8, will allow programmatic access via a REST interface.  There exist software libraries to Create, Register, Update and Delete Handles, mainly in Java, while the older C library and possibly the Python wrappers are less supported nowadays (see above).  The HANDLE system can provide shared caching within a local community; this may be either in a stand-alone cache server mode or as part of a general caching mechanism. Given a cached resolution result, subsequent queries of the same identifier may be provided from the cache without contacting any HANDLE service. This permits an application to perform repetitive functions securely ...
