Traumatic Brain Injury. A traumatically acquired insult to the brain that may cause physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and vocational changes. A closed head injury may be caused by a rapid acceleration/ deceleration, as in a motor vehicle accident. An open head injury is visible insult and may be the result of an accident, gun shot wound, or other physical injuries. Immediate effects are loss of consciousness, loss of memory, or change in vision, strength, coordination, or sensory function. Anatomical abnormalities may be present, such as cerebral hemorrhage or skull fracture. Long term effects may include physical, cognitive, and psycho-social-behavioral- emotional impairments.
