If it is felt that a decision cannot be made via email, the case will be presented by the DSL at the subsequent LGB meeting, for a decision to be made. If the conviction is historic and deemed by DSL and HT to be unlikely to affect the volunteer role in any way: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) will speak with the potential volunteer to find out what the conviction is for and to request to see their DBS certificate (this certificate will state the conviction in writing). Appendix D: Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) Update Following the consultation on CSE, which closed on 11th March 2016, a new, revised definition of child sexual exploitation was set out as follows: ‘Child sexual exploitation is a form of child sexual abuse. It occurs where an individual or group takes advantage of an imbalance of power to coerce, manipulate or deceive a child or young person under the age of 18 into sexual activity (a) in exchange for something the victim needs or wants, and/or (b) for the financial advantage or increased status of the perpetrator or facilitator. The victim may have been sexually exploited even if the sexual activity appears consensual.
