Xxxx Xxxxx and the Spirit of Life Sample Clauses

Xxxx Xxxxx and the Spirit of Life. Although, to my knowledge, there have been no further full-length studies on the origin and source of the idea of inaugurated resurrection in early Christianity, Xxxx Xxxxx’ significant is the fact that Xxxxxxxx dates Colossians very early on compared to, say, Romans. As such the development thesis would not work with Campbell’s dating. 87 For a start, it feels like this reticence is too closely bound up with the view that if Xxxxxxxxxx is pseudonymous, then surely the authentic Xxxx could not have written about resurrection in the same way. 88 Xxxxxxx X. Xxxxxx, Inhabiting the Cruciform God: Kenosis, Justification, and Xxxxxxx in Xxxx’s Narrative Soteriology (Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, 2009), 75 note 97. Inaugurated Resurrection in Modern Scholarship 2008 monograph, The Spirit and Creation in Xxxx raises questions and conclusions that provide a helpful way forward.89 Xxxxx’ thesis is not primarily driven by the question of inaugurated resurrection. Instead, his interest is pneumatology, specifically the background and implications of Xxxx’s description of the Spirit as life-giving. Nonetheless, his argument and conclusions have far-reaching implications for the study of inaugurated resurrection. Xxxxx argues that the background to Xxxx’s description of the Spirit as the Spirit of Life can be traced to the combination of two traditions concerning the Spirit in the Hebrew Scriptures: that of the Spirit as the breath of life, and that of the Spirit as the agent of creation (and renewal of creation). These traditions appear to be initially distinct, but they come to be combined most notably in Ezekiel 36–37, chapters which refer to God giving his Spirit to his people through the imagery of a new heart (Ezekiel 36) and also through the image of resurrection of dry bones (Ezekiel 37). This is a reality which, according to Xxxxx, is developed further in the LXX, particularly in Xxxxxx and the Greek text of Ezekiel 36–37. Other early Jewish literature also associates the Spirit with the renewal of creation, particularly in the Qumran Hodayot.90 Xxxxx argues, convincingly that ‘the authors of the Hodayot believed themselves and their community to be the recipients of the promised spirit of Ezekiel 37:6, 14.’91 Xxxxx does not claim that there is a direct influence flowing from Qumran to Xxxx. Rather he is highlighting the existence of a tradition which shows similarities with Xxxx. Turning to Xxxx, Xxxxx argues that he considered the Spirit of Life to be associated wi...
