TMDL definition

TMDL means the total maximum daily load limitation of a parameter, representing the estimated assimilative capacity for a water body before other designated uses are adversely affected. Mathematically, it is the sum of wasteload allocations for point sources, load allocations for non-point and natural background sources, and a margin of safety.
TMDL means Total Maximum Daily Load, an analysis of pollutant loading to a body of water detailing the sum of the individual waste load allocations for point sources and load allocations for non-point sources and natural background. See 40 CFR §130.2.

Examples of TMDL in a sentence

  • Impaired waters include both waters with approved or established TMDLs, and those for which a TMDL has not yet been approved or established.

  • This special condition is to allow the permit to be reopened if necessary to bring it into compliance with any applicable TMDL approved for the receiving stream.

  • The permit includes a standard reopener to address potential changes in the permit which may be required as a result of a new or revised TMDL.

  • Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Compliance and Documentation: The Department finds that the permit will comply with the approved TMDL and the TMDL Waste Load Allocation (WLA).

  • The permit process consists of: developing permit limitations based upon the effluent limitations for coal mining promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency set forth in 40 CFR 434, the State Water Quality Standards, Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Regulations, and Storm Water guidelines.

More Definitions of TMDL

TMDL means the total maximum daily load limitation of a parameter, representing the estimated assimilative capacity for a water body before other designated uses are adversely affected.
TMDL or “total maximum daily load” means the calculations and plan for meeting water quality standards approved by the EPA and prepared pursuant to 33 U.S.C. § 1313(d) and federal regulations adopted under that law.
TMDL means Total Maximum Daily Load, which is the sum of the individual wasteload allocations for point sources and load allocations for nonpoint sources and natural background.
TMDL or “Total Maximum Daily Load” means the sum of the individual wasteload allocations (WLAs) for point sources and load allocations (LAs) for nonpoint sources and natural background. If a receiving water has only one point source discharger, the TMDL is the sum of that point source WLA plus the LAs for any nonpoint sources of pollution and natural background sources, tributaries, or adjacent segments. TMDLs can be expressed in terms of either mass per time, toxicity, or other appropriate measure.
TMDL means the amount of pollutants specified as a function of one or more water quality parameters that can be dis- charged into a water quality limited surface water segment and still ensure attainment of the applicable water quality standard.
TMDL means the Total Maximum Daily Load analysis to achieve water quality standards for dissolved oxygen in Long Island Sound as established by the Department and as approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency on April 3, 2001.
TMDL means the Rock River Total Maximum Daily Load study approved September 28, 2011 by United States Environmental Protection Agency.
