A Case for Standup Comedy. Although being targeted with racial slurs and stereotypes seems like a perpetual social burden, the targeted individuals/groups can subvert such derogation through different strategies (e.g., social creativity; Xxxxxx & Xxxxxx, 1979). Given the current diverse-audience, diverse-performer media environment, standup comedy has become a powerful tool of subversion: more standup comedians from minority groups are able to give their emic perspectives (Pike, 1966) on existing stereotypes about their groups. In a humorous communication context, these individualized insider voices can carry a strong force in changing established overly simplified mental images about their groups. Thus, stereotype jokes have more opportunities to act as shield than a sword in intergroup interactions. As Rapppoport (2005) points out: [D]epending on their context, jokes and comedy routines involving minorities can have different meanings at different times for different audiences. At the negative extreme, they may be taken as expressions of prejudice encouraging people to accept dehumanizing stereotypes. Yet in contemporary society, one is equally or more likely to encounter various forms of humor that ridicule abusive stereotypes. (p. 2) Extended from Xxxxxxxxx’x (2005) sword and shield metaphor about stereotype humor, Xxxxxxx O’Dea, and Xxxxxx (2016) propose three possible social effects of racial humor - antisocial, prosocial, and null effect. Xxxxxxx et al. point out that “disparagement humor allows for increased expressions of prejudice toward targeted groups by loosening the social norms that normally inhibit prejudice” (p. 77). On the other hand, humor can be used to subvert or challenge social inequality. Furthermore, humor can also be used by minority group members to cope with adversity and stigma. The null effect occurs when a subversion attempt fails, such as when a racial joke is misunderstood by the audience, or even reinforces their existing racial beliefs. In their closing remark, Xxxxxxx et al. suggest that standup comedians should be aware of the potential null or negative effect of their performance when their jokes are misunderstood, and comedians should consider including a “debriefing” to ensure the intended effect of a joke. They conclude: It may be that racial humor provides a unique method of confrontation that decreases expressions of prejudice and incurs less social costs than more overt forms of confrontation.   • STRIKES AND SANCTIONS 19.1 The Association and the Board subscribe to the principle that differences shall be resolved by peaceful and appropriate means without interruption of the school program.   • Payment Method Used for My Transaction Selecting a preferred payment method Paying online If you have chosen an online preferred payment method, it will be shown as the primary method of payment. We'll process payments for goods or services made online using your preferred payment method or an available payment method you choose for a particular transaction during checkout. We'll process payments to friends and family using an available payment method you choose for the transaction. In-store and Automatic Payments If you have chosen a preferred payment method for in store transactions or for automatic payments, we'll process the payment using: • any PayPal balance you hold in the currency of the payment; then • your preferred payment method or an available payment method you choose for any remaining amount. PayPal may share with and receive information from your issuer about your issuer accounts to complete the redemption of your rewards when using PayPal's Pay with Rewards program. The exchange of this information is necessary to complete the purchase when you select the Pay with Rewards redemption option. All Pay with Rewards redemptions are subject to the terms of your card agreement with your card issuer. Pay with Rewards is only available for eligible purchases with certain merchants, and PayPal or your issuer may limit, suspend, or terminate your ability to redeem rewards at any time in accordance with this user agreement, and/or your card agreement and reward program terms. Your issuer determines the value of rewards redeemed through PayPal and available redemption methods (e.g., to pay for your purchase or for a statement credit). There may be a delay between checkout with Pay with Rewards and processing of your payment. Only rewards available upon processing of your payment will be used. Because your reward balance and/or transaction balance may change, whenever you request to redeem rewards for a purchase you also authorise PayPal to charge up to the full payment amount to your associated card if that happens. Cancellations and refunds are subject to your merchant's cancellation and refund policy. PayPal may cancel your transaction as outlined in this user agreement. If your transaction is cancelled or you return your purchase, your refund will be processed back as a dollar amount; depending on your card agreement and reward program terms with your issuer, your issuer may or may not credit your purchase back to your reward balance. If you split your payment between your reward balance and another payment method, PayPal and/or your issuer will choose the order and split of funds when processing a cancellation or refund. Each card issuer may treat chargebacks for purchases involving rewards redemption differently, please check with your card issuer for more information. If your card information changes (including if it is reissued with a new account number), you may need to update your PayPal wallet and re-enroll your card to continue using rewards.

  • WORK STOPPAGES, SECONDARY BOYCOTTS, AND JURISDICTIONAL DISPUTES 16.1 There will be during the term of this Agreement and as to any work covered hereby, no slowdown, no stoppage of work, no strike and no lockout, it being the good faith and intention of the parties hereto that by the execution of this Agreement, industrial peace shall be brought about and maintained, that the parties shall cooperate to the end that work may be done efficiently and without interruption. In the case of any violation of this Agreement the Employer and the Union shall be notified immediately.
