Clinical Nurse Specialist. The CNS role is an advanced practice nurse with clinical expertise for a specialty population. Graduates of this program will be prepared to provide nursing care directly to clients, develop evidence-based standards and programs delivered by nursing personnel, and influence systems that affect healthcare. Each state individually determines the legal scope of practice and criteria for entry- into CNS practice. The Adult-Gerontology CNS program meets the requirements of the California Board of Registered Nursing for state CNS certification. Eligibility to be certified as a CNS in other states, or as a Neonatal or Pediatric CNS in California, requires the successful completion of a national certification examination. The CNS student must complete a minimum of 500 hours in a clinical setting under the supervision of a qualified preceptor and the program faculty.
