Consecutive Use of Sick Leave and Family & Medical Leave. As per Washington State Family Leave Act (1997), the use of Family & Medical Leave is in addition to any leave for the sickness or temporary disability caused by pregnancy or childbirth. An employee may take sick leave for the actual period of disability because of pregnancy or childbirth, and then may also take twelve (12) weeks Family & Medical Leave during her contracted year due to the birth of a child.
