Dance Surfaces. When an Actor is participating in a dance audition, the audition must be conducted on an appropriate dance surface. Actors shall not be required to dance on concrete or marble floors or any other surface which may cause injury to an Actor.

The Artist will not be required to rehearse or perform on concrete or marble floors or on any other surface which is unsafe or may be the cause of an injury to an Artist. The Stage Manager and the CAEA deputies will consult with the Artistic Director or the Artistic Director's designate and the Company Manager if it appears that the performing surface is unsafe or may be the cause of an injury to an Artist during Rehearsal or Performance. The final decision as to whether the Performance surface is unsafe or may be the cause of an injury to an Artist shall be made by the Artistic Director or the Artistic Director's designate.

In addition to the above, the Ballet shall make every reasonable effort to ensure that there is a sprung floor in all performance venues. For the Ballet’s own performances at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium and the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, the Ballet shall provide a sprung floor. For performances or special appearances under one (1) hour that may take place on a harder surface or in a non-traditional venue or location, the affected Dancers will be consulted on appropriate modifications to the choreography.
Dance Surfaces. (1) Artists shall not be required to rehearse dances or dance on concrete or marble floors or on any other surfaces which AGMA shall deem to be injurious or unsafe, or on wood or on any other substance laid directly over such similar surface which do not provide air space of at least one and five-eighths inches between the concrete or marble or similar supporting surface and the dancing surface (i.e., a “sprung floor”). If Artists are required to rehearse or perform in ballet shoes or pointe shoes, a “marley” floor covering must be provided at all times.
(2) Where a portable stage is used, platforms must be fastened securely and the stage completely covered by a level deck or decks of such material as wood or Masonite. The edge of all decks must be clearly visible or protected by securely fastened guardrails.
