Common use of Education and Retraining Assistance Clause in Contracts

Education and Retraining Assistance. (i) An employee with one or more years of continuous service who is terminated as a result of a plant closing will be eligible to receive Education and Retraining Assistance for courses approved by the Company which contribute to or enhance the employee's ability to obtain other employment provided that the employee begins the approved course within one year following termination. Approved courses will normally be given at schools which are accredited by recognized regional or state accrediting agencies and may include: o Occupational or vocational skill development; o Fundamental reading or numerical skill improvement; o High school diploma or equivalency achievement; and o College level career oriented courses. (ii) An employee will be reimbursed up to a maximum of twelve thousand five hundred ($12,500) for authorized expenses which are incurred within three years following termination provided a passing grade is received in the course. Authorized expenses include verified tuition, registration and other compulsory fees, costs of necessary books, and other required supplies. However, if tuition or other authorized expenses are covered by government benefits, other employers, or scholarships, the Company reimbursement will not apply to that portion covered by such other plan. (iii) An employee who elects to receive benefits under the Income Extension Aid layoff option in lieu of benefits under the Plant Closing section of this Article will not be eligible for Education and Retraining Assistance.
