Existing Sewerage Infrastructure Sample Clauses

Existing Sewerage Infrastructure. The Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) for the town has a design capacity of treating 2,200 m³/day, the plant was constructed in the year 1974. The WWTW was not fully constructed and it is currently overloaded. The sewerage network and WWTW is not able to meet the existing demand thus the Water Service Provider (WSP)Kiambu Water and Sewerage Company (KIWASCO) is no longer connecting consumers to the sewerage network. The preliminary design for the project has recommended that waste water for Kiambu town drains to existing sewer network of Nairobi at Kiu River and Gatharaini River Trunk Systems. The sewer network for Kiambu comprises of approximately 11 km of sewers varying in diameters. The existing sewerage network comprises of 4 main trunk mains of DN 225 concrete pipes and DN 160 uPVC laterals. Due to new developments since construction, the existing network is overloaded. The existing sewerage network covers only Kiambu Township and therefore most of the developing areas are not served by the sewer system. The urban and peri-urban areas which are not served by the sewerage network use septic tanks as an alternative mode of sanitation while the rural areas use pit latrines. Existing Sewerage Infrastructure. Despite the rapid population and development growth of Kikuyu town, the town does not have a centralized sewerage system, majority of the properties within the town are served by pit latrines, soakage pits and septic tanks. The soakage pits and septic tank often overflows and dispose raw sewage into the drainage channels which ultimately end up into the permeable subsoil posing pollution threat to water resources and soil contamination. The proposed project comprises a sewerage network to serve the whole of the developed commercial and residential areas of the Kikuyu town, other areas to benefit from the project will include Kikuyu Hospital, Alliance High School and Kikuyu Campus. The whole project drainage area would be by gravity to the proposed outfall connecting to the Nairobi River Trunk Sewer at Dagoretti and eventually being treated at the Dandora Estate Sewerage Treatment Plant. The projected number of consumers within the project area is 4,800 by 2015 and is expected to grow to 8,800 by 2035.
