LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSIONAL IMPROVEMENT. 6.7.1 Any employee who has completed five (5) or more years of continuous teaching service in the Mentor Schools may be granted, with the permission of the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendent, a leave of absence for professional improvement for either one (1) or two (2) semesters. 6.7.2 The teacher shall present to the Superintendent for approval a plan for professional growth prior to such a grant of permission, and at the conclusion of the leave provide evidence that the plan was followed. The teacher shall return to the district for at least two (2) years following the leave for professional improvement. 6.7.3 No such leave shall be granted unless a satisfactory substitute is available, nor shall such leave be granted to more than five percent (5%) of the professional staff at any one time. No such leave shall be granted to a teacher more often than once for each five (5) years of service, nor shall such leave be granted a second time to the same teacher when other members of the staff have filed a request for such leave. 6.7.4 Each certificated employee who meets the requirements and is granted a sabbatical leave may elect to have the year count as a year of service by having his/her share of retirement payments deducted from the leave pay. The salary base for these payments will be the same salary that the person would have received during the year for which the sabbatical leave was granted. 6.7.5 The employee must make the necessary application to the State Teachers Retirement System for approval of retirement fund payments during the leave of absence. The Board will furnish the necessary information to accompany the application. 6.7.6 The Board of Education will remunerate the teacher on leave of absence for professional improvement the difference, if any, between the replacement teacher's salary and the salary of the teacher on leave. After Board approval, individual teachers shall have the right to waive this provision. 6.7.7 Failure on the employee's part to return for two (2) years following this leave shall entitle the Board to take action to recover remuneration paid him/her while on leave. 6.7.8 Upon return from leave of absence for professional improvement, the teacher's placement on the salary schedule will be commensurate with his/her years of teaching service and verified level of training. 6.7.9 A teacher may be granted a leave of absence for professional improvement after three (3) years of service in the Mentor System provided that the aforementioned criteria has been met by the applicant. Further, such applicant would not be eligible for financial remuneration as set forth in paragraph 6. 6.7.10 Except for procedural issues or claim(s) of discrimination relating to Association membership/activity, no element of this leave of absence for professional improvement policy shall be subject to the grievance procedure.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSIONAL IMPROVEMENT. 6.7.1 Any employee who has completed A member of the instructional staff, upon written request to the Board, may be granted a leave of absence with part pay and full fringe benefits for up to one school year. Such leave shall be according to the following provisions:
1. A member of the instructional staff shall have had five (5) or more years service. For the purpose of continuous teaching these regulations, service shall mean additional experience in this district for which experience credit was recognized in determining placement on the Mentor Schools may salary schedule.
2. A plan of professional improvement shall be granted, with furnished to the permission of Superintendent for his/her approval prior to submission to the Board of Education upon the recommendation of the Superintendentfor approval. Upon return, a report shall be filed by the teacher as proof that said plan was followed.
3. The part salary shall be the difference between the employee's expected salary for the next school year and the cost of a replacement for the period of time the sabbatical leave shall be in effect.
4. The Board shall continue to pay its portion of all fringe benefits for an employee while on leave of absence for professional improvement improvement. Further, an employee may make arrangements with the Treasurer's office for either one (1) or two (2) semestersany other voluntary contributions he/she may desire to continue.
6.7.2 The teacher shall present to the Superintendent for approval a plan for professional growth prior to such a grant of permission, and at the conclusion of the leave provide evidence that the plan was followed5. 6.7.3 No such leave shall be granted unless a satisfactory substitute is available, nor shall such leave be granted to Not more than five percent (5%) of the professional instructional staff at any one time. No such leave shall be granted sabbatical leave at one time.
6. The Board will make an attempt to secure a teacher more often than once for each five (5) years of servicereplacement with less experience. However, nor in every case the replacement must be judged to be satisfactorily qualified.
7. Additional leaves shall such leave be granted a second time made available to the same teacher when other members of the instructional staff after completion of five years additional experience, providing others (5%) have not filed a request for such leave.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSIONAL IMPROVEMENT. 6.7.1 Any employee An MBU who has completed five (5) or more years of continuous teaching service in the Mentor Fairview Park Schools may be grantedmay, with the permission of the Board of Education upon the recommendation of and the Superintendent, take a leave of absence with part pay, for professional improvement for either one (1) or two (2) semesters.semesters subject to the following restrictions:
6.7.2 1. The teacher MBU shall present to the Superintendent for approval approval, a plan for professional growth prior to such a grant of permission, and at the conclusion of the leave provide evidence that the plan was followed.
2. The teacher shall MBU will be required to return to the district Fairview Park School District at the end of the leave for a period of at least two (2) years following unless the MBU has completed twenty-five (25) years of teaching in the State of Ohio. Applications for leave of absence for professional improvement must be filed in writing with the Superintendent no later than April 1 of the school year prior to the leave year. The Superintendent and Board shall respond to the request no later than May 15. The Board is not permitted to pay a part salary in excess of the difference between the MBU’s expected salary and the salary of the MBU who fills his/her position for the year. The Board also may not grant professional improvement.
6.7.3 No such leave shall be granted unless a satisfactory substitute is available, nor shall such leave be granted leaves to more than five percent (5%) of the professional staff at any one time. No such , nor grant a leave shall be granted longer than one (1) school year, nor grant a leave to a teacher any MBU more often than once for each five (5) years of service, nor shall such grant a leave be granted a second time to the same teacher individual when other members of the staff have filed a request for such leave.

After Board approval, individual teachers shall have the right to waive this provision.
6.7.7 Failure on the employee's part to return for two (2) years following this leave shall entitle the Board to take action to recover remuneration paid him/her while on leave.
6.7.8 Upon return from leave of absence for professional improvement, the teacher's placement on the salary schedule will be commensurate with his/her years of teaching service and verified level of training.
6.7.9 A teacher may be An MBU granted a leave of absence for professional improvement after graduate work beyond the master’s degree shall be given credit for the year of study as though it were a year of teaching on the salary schedule, if he has a minimum of three (3) years of service in the Mentor System provided that Fairview Park Schools. MBUs on leave of absence for work leading to the aforementioned criteria has been met by master’s degree and MBUs working beyond the applicant. Further, such applicant would master’s degree with less than three (3) years of service in the Fairview Park Schools shall not be eligible given credit on the salary schedule for financial remuneration as set forth in paragraph 6.
6.7.10 Except for procedural issues or claim(s) of discrimination relating to Association membership/activity, no element of this such year. An MBU on leave of absence for professional improvement policy who has completed five (5) years of service in the Fairview Park Schools may maintain in force all fringe benefits available through the Board with premiums paid by the Board to the same extent they would be paid if the MBU were on active duty. An MBU with less than five (5) years of service may maintain in force all fringe benefits available through the Board upon advance of monthly payment to the Treasurer. All MBUs on an approved leave of absence for Professional Improvement shall have such time applied to their accrued seniority in the District. Upon return from leave, the MBU will be reinstated to a position which, insofar as practicable, shall be subject the same to that held prior to the grievance procedureleave, unless the MBU has been affected by a reduction in force, pursuant to Article 22 of this contract in which event the provisions of Article 22 shall govern the MBU’s status.
