Low-Elevation Area/Sagebrush Dominated Landscape Sample Clauses

Low-Elevation Area/Sagebrush Dominated Landscape. The low-elevation area/sagebrush dominated landscape (hereinafter, the Low-Elevation Area) ranges primarily from 6,300 to 6,500 feet elevation and an average of 9 to 10 inches of annual precipitation. The low-elevation area includes a mix of 1) clay basins with predominately low sagebrush (Artemisia arbuscula) and other native shrubs, grasses and forbs; 2) upland xxxxx or loamy soils dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata var. wyomingensis) over native grasses and forbs or crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum); and, 3) irrigated lands. Much of the acreage on both the private land and the public land within the low-elevation area of the Ranch was planted to crested wheatgrass more than 50 years ago and has been repopulated through natural succession by Wyoming big sagebrush and a few other native species. These historic plantings from the 1960s are not included as treatments in Table 3. The current mix of vegetation is maintained by Ranch management practices. This area is managed for a mix of grasses, forbs and shrubs to provide forage for cattle and habitat for wintering elk (Cervus canadensis), mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), pronghorn (Antilocapra americana), and GSG. The low-elevation area provides essential spring grazing pasturage for cattle. During xxxxxxx of heavy snow accumulations, winter range vegetation on the low-elevation area can be covered by snow, reducing forage and browse available to cattle, elk and mule deer. Supplemental feeding of cattle and big game may be necessary in deep snow periods to maintain animal condition and to minimize hay depredation by elk on neighboring ranches. The low- elevation area irrigated lands, playas and xxxxxxx provide summer range for cattle, pronghorn, GSG, and a suite of waterfowl and shorebirds. Pygmy rabbits and sagebrush passerines occur on some upland sites within the low-elevation area of the Ranch. There are six active leks located in the low-elevation area that serve approximately 60% of the total GSG population on the Ranch (Figure 2). This area also provides some nesting and brood rearing habitat but is of principal importance as winter habitat for GSG.
