New Zealand Fisheries Management Sample Clauses

New Zealand Fisheries Management. Brief description New Zealand has roughly 4.4 million km2 in marine fisheries Waters (Exclusive Economic Zone -EEZ- and Territorial Sea), with 16,000 species identified and 130 commercially fished. In 2010 there were 97 species/species complexes in Quota Management Systems (QMS) and 633 individual stocks. 72% of catch was from assessed stocks and 67.5% of those were at or near target level. The industry receives no direct government subsidies. The fisheries resources within New Zealand EEZ are neither abundant nor productive in relative terms mainly caused by a narrow continental shelf, a lack of nutrient upwelling, and being on the periphery of the range of highly migratory species, such as tuna (Xxxxx, 2003).
