Opiates Sample Clauses

Opiates. Long-term opiate users have demonstrated neuropsychological decrements in attention, concentration, visual and verbal recall and visual spatial skills (Xxxxx and Xxxxxx, 2011; Xxxxxx, Silveri, and Xxxxxxxx-Xxxx, 2007). Diminished cognitive functioning is associated with opiate use in various executive function domains such as inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and working memory (Xxxxx and Schilt, 2011). Both abstinent opiate- dependent subjects on methadone maintenance and complete abstinent opiate-dependent subjects not on methadone maintenance (abstinent for >18 months) exhibit similar cognitive deficits in fluid intelligence, working memory, and design fluency compared to healthy normal controls (Xxxxxxx et al., 2008). The most consistent findings in abstinent opiate-dependent individuals (abstinent for 1-4 weeks) were abnormal executive functioning (such as lowered inhibition, verbal fluency, and decision-making skills) (Xxxxx and Xxxxxx, 2011; Xxxxxxx-Xxxxxx and Xxxxx-Xxxxxx, 2007; Xxxxx, Xxxx-Xxxxx, Xxxxxxxx, and Xxxxxxxxxxx, 2008; Xxxxxxx-Xxxxxx, Xxxxxxx, and Xxxxx-Xxxxxx, 2007). These deficits persisted from 6 to 52 weeks (Xxxxx and Xxxxxx, 2011; Xxxxxxx et al., 2008; Xxxxxx, Xxxxxxxx, and XxXxxxxx, 2002). However, findings from a more recent study suggest that prospective memory is more sensitive to long-term opiate use than executive functioning (Xxxxxxx et al., 2014).
