Common use of Payment of Accumulated Sick Leave at Death Clause in Contracts

Payment of Accumulated Sick Leave at Death. One-half (1/2) of the accumulated Sick Leave shall be paid to a designed beneficiary upon the death of a current employee. Such payment will be in a lump sum based upon the employee’s hourly rate of pay at the time of death (excluding any premium pay). If there is not valid written designation of beneficiary on file, or if the designation is for any reason ineffective, the payment shall be made to the employee’s estate except that the City may authorize the payment of such amount to any one or more of the surviving spouse, adoptive parents, lineal descendants by adoption, or blood relatives of the employee, or a beneficiary to receive payments after the death of the employee under the State Retirement System, and any such payment shall be in complete discharge of liability with respect to the amount so paid.
