PERSPECTIVES & CAPABILITIES. ‌ Early in this project interviews with select suppliers (VAD contractors for the USDOT Safety Pilot, CES exhibitors and SEMA) regarding connected vehicle technology in general and the exploratory ASD deployment scenarios proposed under Subtask 2 indicated the majority believed that ASDs would not sell based on their own merits (crash avoidance). They believed that these devices would need to be bundled with more consumer oriented convenience and entertainment functions to be marketable. These companies did not see a market yet, but felt that based on their consumer electronics product experience, they could react with a product within six months once the market appeared viable. Many also noted that privacy was not a big concern to the consumer electronics community as they felt consumers were willing to sacrifice some amount of privacy in order to get the information and functionality they desired (consider the popularity of location based services available on many mobile communications devices) . The Market Penetration Analysis for VSC-A Safety Benefit Opportunities Estimation 18 previously performed for USDOT assumed various consumer take rates in order to examine the potential influence of ASDs on overall connected vehicle system benefits. While Best Buy is now selling and installing OnStar FMVTM systems as aftermarket safety equipment, discussions with members of the Consumer Electronics Association Automotive Board revealed that many of them felt it was too early for a market study of ASDs.
