SCIENTIFIC & TECHNOLOGICAL OBJECTIVES. Based on the concise analysis presented above, Local4Global attempts to fill a number of methodological, technological and practical gaps for the development of a generic fully-functional system (shown in Figure 1) capable of successfully addressing the ambitious goals of the project. This major objective is pursued within Local4Global via a number of multifaceted actions and S&T Objectives. Table 1 below summarizes the S&T objectives of Local4Global along with the basic ingredients to be used towards achieving these objectives while Figure 1 exhibits the key approach employed within Local4Global along with the Local4Global system modules. 3A "cooperative traffic/transport system" is defined as a traffic/transport system which, apart from the "conventional" traffic/transport control measures (e.g., traffic signals, variable speed limits and variable message signs), allows also the system infrastructure to control directly the behaviour of all or some of the individual vehicles (e.g., by controlling the speed/acceleration profiles as well as the routes of each individual vehicle).
