PHS support definition

PHS support means PHS funding, or applications or proposals therefor, for biomedical or behavioral research, biomedical or behavioral research training, or activities related to that research or training, that may be provided through: funding for PHS extramural research; PHS grants, cooperative agreements, or contracts or subgrants or subcontracts under those PHS funding instruments; or salary or other payments under PHS grants, cooperative agreements or contracts.

• Prior to the submission of an application for PHS support for a research project on which Respondent’s participation is proposed and prior to Respondent’s participation in any capacity in PHS-supported research, Respondent will submit a plan for supervision of Respondent’s duties to ORI for approval.

"Research" means a systematic investigation, including research development, testing, and evaluation,designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge. Activities that meet this definition constitute research for purposes of this Chapter, whether or not they are conducted or supported under a program that is considered research for other purposes.
