Coastal Hydraulics Analysis. The project site is located in a 100 year flood plain in a FEMA designated AE zone. The 100 year storm water elevation, obtained from FEMA FIRM panels, indicate that the bridge will be fully submerged during a 100 year storm event. Additionally, this highway has been delineated as an evacuation route. Due to these aforementioned facts, it is critical that a detailed hydrodynamic and wave impact analysis be conducted to ensure that the bridge design is resilient to extreme weather events over the duration of its design life. As the bridge is expected to be submerged during a 100 year storm event, the following hydrodynamic and wave loading issues need to be addressed • Slamming loads on bridge slabs due to overtopping waves including the impacts on the slamming loads due to air entrapment. The impact of air entrapment on slamming loads can be significant if girder spans are utilized in the design. • The impact of increased quasi static vertical loads during the surge and wave propagation in displacement or removal of spans and slabs from their initial positions and the consequent failure of associated structural components. • Impacts of increased hydrostatic loading during the transient surge propagation. • Scour of the supporting bridge foundations due to storm surge and associated waves. During a storm surge, the leading surge has the potential to cause significant scour that can weaken the foundation and lead to failure under subsequent drag load. • Hydrodynamic drag force due to the transient surge and wave action. In order to address these complex and critical hydrodynamic issues, the engineer will provide the following services:
