Monitoring Salt Usage MONITORING PROGRAM. OBJECTIVE To monitor the effects of salt use in the areas identified as being potentially vulnerable. ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATION Environmentally Sensitive areas, such as provincially significant wetlands and special policy areas are more susceptible to salt use impacts. These areas may require unique solutions, including the use of new slat application technologies in order to avoid potential salt impacts. By monitoring these areas, we can then determine if these areas are being impacted and whether unique solutions should be applied. CURRENT SITUATION The County currently does not monitor environmentally sensitive areas. The County has performed a preliminary study to determine the County road sections that are in close proximity to an environmentally sensitive area. These areas can be used as locations to set up monitoring stations in the future. GOAL The County will explore monitoring measures in order to determine the potential impact on environmentally sensitive areas, as well as the impact of the measures set out in the Salt Management Plan. RESPONSIBILITIES Management will explore various monitoring programs put in place by other jurisdictions and determine which method of monitoring would be best suited for our area. Management will look at implementing a monitoring program in order to determine the impacts of salt use on ESA’s as well as determining the effectiveness of new technologies on minimizing the impacts in vulnerable areas (i.e. pre-wetting, etc.) PERFORMANCE MEASURE The results obtained through monitoring measure will be used to determine the impacts of salting in ESA’s. First year results will be used as a benchmark to measure the results of subsequent years. This will help determine whether new technologies are being effective or not at minimizing impacts.
